Midday Meal Programme (MDM) emerged to address the multiple challenges of poverty, hunger and access to education by providing lunch at schools. Prior to receiving Midday meal, many impoverished children performed poorly in school due to short attention span associated with extreme hunger. Other children either did not enroll in school or dropped out at a young age choosing to seek work during the school day to earn money to feed themselves and their families. Therefore, with a view to enhance enrolment, retention and attendance and simultaneously improving the nutritional levels amongst the children, the National Programme of Nutritional support to primarily education, commonly known as the Midday Meal scheme was launched by Government of India in 2001.
